Our History

In 1906, a handful of Civil Engineering students at Illinois came together to create an organization that could offer the family-like support and guidance they lost when leaving their homes to come to the University. Stereotypes against fraternities back then were as strong as they are now, and these men decided to model Triangle as a professional fraternity which would stress the importance of strong academics and clear career goals. With this in mind, Triangle Fraternity was founded here at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign on April 15, 1907.

Within three years, "Chapters" of Triangle had spread to nearby Purdue and Ohio State Universities. Over time, Triangle also became a social and professional fraternity, and has opened its membership to students of all forms of engineering, as well as those studying architecture and the "hard" sciences such as chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

However, Triangle still remains true to its roots - we exist to provide a place and brotherhood that will help its members succeed at the University, in their careers, and in their future lives.

Our Mission

Triangle's stated mission is

to develop balanced men in the fields of engineering, architecture, and science by providing an environment which fosters personal growth as well as personal success.

Our Chapter

Triangle Fraternity is active with campus activities, most notably with those of the Engineering Council and the Interfraternity Council. In the past, we have participated in the EOH Robot Competition, Homecoming Float competition, and Atius-Sachem Mom's Day Sing. We host a number of social exchanges with sororities and women's groups on campus, and schedule brotherhood events for our membership throughout the year.

The Chapter House at 112 East Daniel Street serves as the residence of most of our membership, though some of our members live in the dorms or in on-campus apartments. Our house boasts large common areas, a home theater with projector screen, a game room, a computer room, and an exercise and weight room. Our house server maintains an extensive house files network for most engineering and science classes at UIUC, though most students prefer to rely on the past experiences and knowledge of our older brothers!

Triangle's greatest strength lies in its alumni. Our members have gone on to several successful careers, but still maintain a strong connection to our chapter. Our alumni are constant guests to our chapter and regularly provide career advising as well as alert us to internship and full-time positions!

The Triangle Alumni website can be reached at alumni.triangle-uiuc.org.

Our National Organization

While our Chapter has a very proud history, Triangle Fraternity has spread to other campuses almost immediately after its inception! The National Fraternity provides assistance and resources to all its chapters and organizes nation-wide events for all Triangle brothers, including alternative spring break and service opportunities!

The National Fraternity also coordinates the Herbert Scobie Leadership School and Leadership Training Weekend. These programs help develop members from all chapters into student leaders that can bring real improvements and values-based action to their campuses and communities.

The National Triangle website can be reached at www.triangle.org.
